An defense minister has stated that the MoD is currently examining the possible threats associated with Chinese cars, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from discussing secret information in all cars.
In a recent appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on reports that MoD officials have been instructed not to discuss secret material while travelling in China-made cars.
He said that the ministry is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but noted that security is a concern in all modern vehicles.
Our department has a collection of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to only have those secret conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about safety.
When it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using every cars from China, the minister responded: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”
This revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable China to disable buses and cause chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.
This broader defence situation highlights the significance of robust measures and caution in all aspects of government activities, including transport use to discussions habits.
